As the parent of a teen, you may be well-versed in the emotional ups and downs that come with having one of these adolescents in your home. One day your teen is fine. The next day, he or she is raging and crying against the world. The ups and downs are part of the teenage years, and you will survive it just like your parents survived yours. You can gain experience dealing with the temporary romantic crisis and turn the child's attention to other things in life by using these tips.

To start, it may be important for you as the adult to realize that you may not soothe the situation by bringing up the teen's good fortune. Your son or daughter will not care at that point in time that he or she has a house, food, a phone, clothing, and perhaps even a car. These luxuries pale in comparison to the pain of having someone they wanted to love them ultimately reject them.

Further, this attempt to gloss over the hurt does not address the underlying situation, which is rejection of their love interest. Being rejected is a major fear of most teens. At this age, they need to be accepted and if not loved at least admired by their peers. Rejection can be a deep wound to their psyche.

Indeed, they may even love the romantic interest more than they love you at least one a temporary basis. Your love for them is easy to take for granted because you are a constant in their life. They are not threatened that you will withdraw your love from them. As such, it takes a lesser role in the situation right now.

Therefore, as a parent your primary choice is to diver their attention away and force them to concentrate on something else. If your teenager does not have a job, you might require him or her to get one. A job forces your child to keep busy and prevents him or her from languishing in emotional purgatory in the bedroom.

Chores like raking, mowing, taking out the garbage, and other general cleaning can be good for the entire body and mind. Hard work pumps blood throughout the body and encourages the brain to create endorphins that induce feelings of happiness. In time, your daughter or son may start to act and feel normally again.

It would not be out of the question for you to reward them for doing the chores or working a job as asked. A trip to the local shopping mall for a new outfit or a visit to a nearby resort could soothe the pain if at least temporarily. Ultimately, your child will need to be guided toward objectifying the conflict and learning that the rejection is not his or her problem but the problem of the other person involved.

Teenagers who suffer emotional turmoils and hearts that are broken by rejection are not easy with which to live. It may be up to you as the parent to take control of the situation. These ideas could right the upheaval in your household and divert attention elsewhere.

As many baby-boomer wives know, marriages face new challenges as couples age. These hurdles are not necessarily more difficult, but they are different. One common problem is coping with a husband hard of hearing. Since hearing loss happens to most people after the age of 75, this changes life for more than half the senior population.

One significant change is that the peaceful home may be peaceful no longer. If you're a wife whose husband comes home tired from a long day, or whose husband has retired and is around the house all day (another life change!), you may have noticed that the television has become so loud that ignoring it even in other rooms is impossible. Fortunately, there are things like ear phones that can help one person hear the sound without deafening everyone else.

He gets up and heads for the table. After grace, he begins to eat - his favorite chicken fried steak! When he looks up for the salt, he sees his wife's lips moving, but doesn't hear a thing. Since he no longer hears high-pitched sounds, which includes female voices, and she's looking down at her plate, he say "What?" She sighs and says, "Nothing."

Or perhaps what she's saying is important, so she says it again, with wholly unnecessary emphasis and volume. "You don't have to shout!" he responds, and their happy meal is headed downhill fast. Counselors say that this common problem is very disruptive. They actually show women how to look directly at their husbands, pitch their voices low, and speak slowly and clearly. Only a well-informed and loving wife can accept this new approach gracefully, especially since her husband may not even notice her extra effort.

Looked at casually, this seems a minor problem, but actually it's a major one. Losing the ability for easy intercourse lowers the quality of life for all. Solutions like battery-powered aids are worth investigating before they are absolutely required. There are many different kinds and even the most perfect ones will need careful fitting and adjusting to work well.

There is also surgery, which once used to be performed mostly on children with a lifetime of impairment before them but is now not unusual among seniors. It's really worth investigating what can be done to help your spouse hear things like the grandchildren, general conversations when the family gets together, voices on the phone, and sermons in church.

If you don't face this problem yet, it's still a good idea to get informed. All sorts of illnesses (heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other circulatory problems) and medications can cause men to lose their hearing. Deafness, they say, is more isolating than blindness, so it's worth protecting your ears early in life and finding solutions to help people hear later.

There are specialists, clinics, and professional hearing aid technicians to help people cope with hearing problems. Men are especially prone to this condition, since many professions harm the inner ear. Carpenters, plumbers, miners, farmers, factory workers, musicians, and those in the military are often exposed to unsafe noise levels. Wives can help their husbands enjoy normal human interactions longer if they react proactively to this common problem.
