The New Fiber Optic Installation Methods

By Vicki Diaz

When the technology changed for how we connect to the Internet there was a few options but for the most part the general consumer had three. They could go with DSL which stands for Digital Subscriber Line or a cable install which could connect to your already set up cable system (if you had one) or you could go with a fiber optic installation.

The technology was touted as the solution to slow speeds, low bandwidth, and lengthy implementation projects. Or at least that is what it was promised to be. When it was first made available to the general consumer markets people were on the verge of just adding faster speeds and higher bandwidths with cable. They have just moved, or were about to move, from DSL to cable.

Well, that is just not true. The cities that have undergone successful integrations from cable to fiber optics have seen great improvements in their Internet speeds, throughput and efficiency. Now true, this technology is not for everybody, nor is it for every situation or scenario. But for those that it does fit it works out really well.

This was especially evident in towns where they were trying to decide which way to go for the sake of the public interests in that town. There were meetings, town hall events, and various educational talks as well as an equal number of live debates on the benefits and drawbacks of each system. In all honesty the information that came available during all of this was educational and helped the general public.

Because of the speeds obtainable through such systems they are a very enticing technology for those who are wanting more efficiency and data bandwidth through their networks. When it was first introduced to the consumer market it was the "in" thing and almost everybody wanted it. The unfortunate part of it all was that not everyone felt the same.

Once they went through the hard part and had everything running they were happy they did. The systems worked great. This technology works on the basis of light and the light transfers the data from point A to point B and it does it much faster than a cable signal can because nothing is faster than light. The technology is sound and it works great.

These systems are not easy to put into the ground. Long ditches must be dug so that the cables can be strung from area to area connecting everyone. Once the infrastructure was installed the rest would be much easier because it did not matter to your computer or router which system you had.

While it might not be a fair way to fight the battle, that did not stop the large cable companies from threatening to cancel contract or agreements if someone went with a fiber optic installation. While those are a very small percentage of the entire market at this point, the number is on the rise and maybe in time we will have the system that we all wanted, until cable forced themselves on us all.
